PLA Fabius Township Buoy Statement

Pleasant Lake Association of Fabius Township—Buoy Statement—June 9, 2026

The following is information regarding the Pleasant Lake Association of Fabius Township’s application for navigational buoys near “the narrows”.

The application initiates a review process with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). If the DNR elects to consider the application, any recommendations or suggested actions resulting from that review would be subject to further evaluation and consideration. The application itself does not impose restrictions on lake users. The application is part of an information-gathering and review process. It allows the DNR to evaluate conditions and provide recommendations regarding navigation and safety near the narrows. If, and when, a firm proposal emerges that is supported by the DNR, the PLA membership will be solicited for input via a poll/vote. Should the membership determine that they do not support the ultimate recommendation, it’s our understanding that the Association retains the ability to not pursue implementation.

The purpose of the application is to explore ways to improve safety and navigation in an area where multiple recreational uses intersect while preserving access for all lake users. It is useful to consider what drove the perceived need for this buoy proposal. There seems to have been an increase in unsafe boating practices near, and in, the narrows. Given the 100’ rule where a boat operating at wake speed must stay at least 100 feet from shore, docks, other vessels, people in the water, etc., there should probably never be more than 2 boats passing through the narrows at a time. If you’re a faster moving vessel pulling a skier/tuber, consider taking another loop until the narrows clear. If you’re a slower moving vessel in the narrows, maybe pick up speed a little to hasten your passage through the narrows as a courtesy to those waiting to get through.

The Association recognizes that reasonable people may have differing opinions regarding lake management. Constructive discussion is welcome, and community members are encouraged to review the actual application and supporting information before drawing conclusions.

Pleasant Lake is a shared resource. The submission of an application is not a final decision; it is the beginning of a process designed to gather information and expert input. We encourage residents to attend meetings, ask questions, share perspectives, and consider serving in leadership positions so that all voices can be heard as the process moves forward.

Together, we can ensure that any future decisions reflect both the safety needs and recreational interests of the broader Pleasant Lake community.

Respectfully,

Pleasant Lake Association of Fabius Township Board
